 NEW CARS. ---- SHELBY GT500KR.

THE KING IS BACK.

It's been 40 years since the first Shelby GT500KR ( King of the Road ) Mustang hit the streets. This 21st-century edition delivers a staggering 540 hp and 510 lb. ft. of torque from a supercharged 5.4 liter V8 at an equally staggering $79,995. Pricey?? Hell, yes, But owning a KR means you have the most powerful Mustang -- ever. Underhood prowess is abetted by a quick-throw gear lever topped by a perfectly simple white ball. Quick shifting and a 3.73:1 axle ratio produce sprints to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds and quarter-mile times of 12.1 seconds

Accompanying the invigorated drivetrain is a chassis with a firmer suspension, increased camber and stickier Goodyears. We expected most aspects of the KR's conduct to be somewhat hefty in nature, only the clutch and shifter have manly weighting. The ride is compliant. And you can appreciate the muscular engine, not to mention the deep, staccato exhaust bark and the supercharger's manic scream. There's plenty of torque at low revs.

But when you dig in for power, the tach flicks quickly to 6250 rpm, and you are into the rev limiter before you know it. In higher gears, that broad band of power thrusts the car for long, sustained stretches. And, of course, it gains speed with an ease that speaks of 540 horses.

 NEMATODE NATION.

TINY WORMS REVEAL LARGE SECRETS.

Researchers this year announced they had invented a microscopic operating table for tiny, unsegmented round-worms called nematodes. The question is: Why?? What could researchers learn from creatures that can be as small as 0.3 mm ( as thick as a grain of sand.?)

The operating table traps individual nematodes and severs their nerves with laser pulses to study how their nervous systems repair themselves. The research could lead to treatments for human nerve damage.

It turns out nematodes are great lab specimens, they have nearly as many genes as humans, and their organs parallel ours. Rats may be biologically closer, but logistically, it's hard to beat tiny, fast reproducing worms.

5 THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH NEMATODES.

1. FLY THEM IN SPACE. Nematodes are used to test the biological effects of spaceflight, such as genetic damage that can be caused by exposure to cosmic radiation.

2. FIGHT INSECTS. Some nematodes can kill crop pests by entering insects bodies and killing them with bacteria. Worm offspring eat the hosts before moving on.

3. CURE DISEASE. Recent testing suggests that more than 65 percent of human disease genes have equivalents in the genome of the Caenorhabditis elegans nematode.

4. ARGUE FOR E.T. LIFE. Nematodes were the sole survivors of the space shuttle COLUMBIA crash, supporting the theory that life could migrate between planets on meteors.

5. STUDY COEVOLUTION. Nematode eggs make tropical ants swell and discolor to resemble berries, birds eat the ants, other ants forage the bird's waste and get infected.
